BMW is set to launch a special, driver-focused variant of its iconic M3 sedan, the 2027 M3 CS Handschalter, exclusively for the North American market. This limited-edition model distinguishes itself by exclusively offering a six-speed manual transmission and a pure rear-wheel-drive setup, a significant departure from recent high-performance M3 iterations that featured all-wheel-drive and automatic gearboxes. The announcement positions the M3 CS Handschalter as a final tribute to the current generation of the M3 before the upcoming release of the next-generation Neue Klasse M3.

The "Handschalter," German for "manual shifter," is engineered to provide a raw, engaging driving experience. It will retain the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 engine, producing 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. While this power output matches the base model manual M3, it represents a reduction compared to the all-wheel-drive M3 CS. However, the reduced weight and enhanced chassis tuning are expected to deliver exhilarating performance, with BMW claiming a 0-to-60 mph time of 4.1 seconds and a top speed of 180 mph.

Weight Reduction and Chassis Tuning

BMW engineers have focused on shedding weight to enhance the Handschalter's agility and responsiveness. The vehicle is approximately 42 pounds lighter than the standard manual M3. This weight reduction is achieved through extensive use of carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) components, including the hood, roof, front splitter, air intakes, side mirrors, and rear spoiler. Further weight savings come from a titanium exhaust silencer, which shaves off over 8 pounds, and optional carbon-ceramic brakes that can reduce weight by an additional nearly 32 pounds. The chassis, engine, transmission, and steering systems have all undergone specific tuning for the Handschalter. It will feature the shock absorbers from the M4 CSL, along with new springs and a revised rear axle link that lowers the car by 0.2 inches. Even the wheel camber settings are unique to this model, promising sharper handling.

Standard wheels will measure 19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the rear, finished in gold, and come equipped with high-performance or track-oriented tires. For those seeking ultimate grip, ultra-track tires will be available as an option. Additionally, a cast-aluminum M front strut brace can be purchased for $1,100, further enhancing structural rigidity.

The interior mirrors the driver-centric approach, featuring a CFRP center console and Mugello Red-trimmed carbon bucket seats. Anthracite is the sole leather color option. For added convenience, a "Daily Driver" package offers a head-up display and a power trunk. Standard amenities include a Harman Kardon surround sound system and comfort access.

The 2027 M3 CS Handschalter will be available in striking exterior colors such as Black Sapphire and Isle of Man Green at no additional cost. For those seeking a retro aesthetic, classic hues like Imola Red and Techno Violet will be offered for an additional $4,500. BMW is also equipping the Handschalter with M Drive Professional as standard, which includes features like Drift Analyzer and a lap timer, complemented by a ten-stage traction control system.

Driver-assist systems are configurable through three distinct settings accessible from the center console: Road, Sport, and Track. Externally, the Handschalter presents a familiar yet aggressive stance, incorporating the facelift G80's vertical daytime running lights, which illuminate in yellow, a signature of BMW's CS models. The design includes slightly more aggressive grille and air intake designs, a lower front splitter with distinct winglets, and additional carbon-fiber elements, including prominent stripes on the hood.

Deliveries for the 2027 M3 CS Handschalter are slated to begin in the fall in both the United States and Canada. Despite its rarity and specialized nature, the Handschalter will be priced competitively. It will start at $108,450 including destination in the U.S. This places it above the base manual M3 and the M3 Competition xDrive, but notably, it is $11,245 cheaper than the automatic 2024 AWD CS model it effectively replaces in the lineup. The car is scheduled to make its public debut on May 23, 2026, at the Petersen Automotive Museum's All-BMW Cruise-In event in Los Angeles, with the official reveal commencing at 10:00 a.m.
